Edwin Lee Dial

1913 ~ 2004

Edwin Lee Dial, 90, passed away peacefully Monday, March 29, 2004, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Born December 11, 1913, to Samuel Dial and Mae Lucetta Stoddard in Shelley, Idaho. Married Donna Pearl Tyner February 24, 1937; divorced. Married Velma Louise Unsworth April 7, 1943 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Happily married 59 years, she died July 24, 2002.

Educated in Idaho, Dad learned many of life's lessons growing up on the family farm. He was a good provider, and retired from Kennecott Smelter. He was a caring neighbor who mowed lawns and shoveled walks for the widowed and elderly neighbors, always enlisting our help to instill in us both a compassion for our fellowman as well as the importance of hard work and honest labor.

He took great pride in his home, yard and community, and was the recipient of the Salt Lake City Good Neighbor Award. But the recognition he most enjoyed was from the many neighbors and children who loved him because of his good heart and kind actions.

Dad was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His service as a missionary in the North Central States Mission 1939-1941 included serving as District President of South Minnesota for 14 months. He served in the 34th Ward Bishopric and many other callings throughout his life. His greatest service was as a loving husband, honorable father and grandfather. We are grateful for his example and love.

An army veteran of World War II, Dad served in Italy. He enjoyed good music and sang with the Swanee Singers in the early years of his marriage, and also joined in singing around the campfire at the annual family campout. He was a member of the Numismatic Society for many years.

Ed is survived by 10 children: Thomas (Gail), Larry (Cathye), Sharon (Roger) Carrier, E. Lynn (LaNett), Louise (Bob) Benzon, Glen (Vicki), Verna (Terry) Broadbent, Fay (Neil) Weight, Lee (Julie), and Wayne (Cyndie); 45 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his loving wife; parents; seven brothers and eight sisters.

Our heartfelt thanks to the staff of Christus St. Joseph Villa for their loving and attentive care of Dad. Funeral services will be Friday, April 2, 2004, at 1 p.m. in the Riverside Ward, 1148 West 500 North, Salt Lake City. Friends may call Thursday, April 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, Salt Lake City, and Friday 11:30 to 12:45 p.m. at the ward prior to services. Interment: Salt Lake City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Christus St. Joseph Villa or charity of your choice.
